Mission Statement

​

At Behind the Barrel, our mission is to honor Ohio's fallen roadside construction workers; support their families and colleagues, and work to reduce preventable death and work-related injuries.​

Problem Statement

In 2023, there were over 4,500 work zone crashes in Ohio, resulting in 101 fatalities, many of whom were innocent workers simply doing their jobs. These aren't just statistics. They are parents, siblings, and friends whose lives were cut short. Construction and utility workers face life-threatening risks every day in active work zones, yet they often receive little public recognition or legislative protection. The danger is real, the impact is devastating, and the support for affected families is often too little, too late.

Our Response

Behind the Barrel exists to bring compassion, recognition, and real support to the families of fallen or injured utility and roadside workers. Through emergency financial assistance, public awareness campaigns, and legislative advocacy, we:
 

  • Help families cover critical expenses after a tragedy (like mortgage, funeral, or education costs),
     

  • Push for stricter enforcement and smarter laws to keep workers safer in work zones.


We believe no family should face heartbreak alone and no worker’s sacrifice should go unseen or unhonored.
