Behind the Barrel isn’t just another 501(c)(3) nonprofit. It was founded by Matt Kokal, a construction worker—someone who leaves home every day not knowing if today will bring another near miss, or something far worse.

That reality is shared by road construction crews, public utility workers, and countless others who work behind the barrels. Recognizing that something had to be done, Behind the Barrel was created to bring education, awareness, and advocacy to those who risk their lives simply doing their jobs. Because everyone behind these barrels deserves to know their work matters—and that if the unthinkable happens, they won’t be forgotten.

At Behind the Barrel, we become the family of support. We step in to help cover costs, support loved ones left behind, keep memories alive, and advocate for safer work zones so fewer families have to face this loss.
